PKN Constructions recently constructed a new DDA compliant 35-metre covered walkway connecting the main building to a remote class room at the north end of the school grounds at Toormina Public. With the walkway positioned at the bottom of a large expanse of sloping ground, an important feature of this project was the significant civil and landscaping works involved to ensure the new path was not swamped with water running onto it during heavy rain. The landscaping included a series of layered, zig-zagging retaining walls to capture and deflect the water running down toward the path, and a complex network of storm water and drainage plumbing beneath the ground. And while the intention is to keep the path dry the school can now use this previously desolate and uninteresting part of the grounds as a fun and engaging outdoor learning area for the kids also.
Other features of the project include new terrazzo-style masonry tiered seating in the main assembly area, and a raft of impressive and modern stainless steel handrails throughout.
